Get message 'file contains queries to external data' but it doesn't

Hello,

I am trying to open a file created through a mainframe tool run. The tool creates 3 files that have the same format, just different records. I can open 2 of the files successfully in Excel 2003, but on the third I get the following message: "File contains queries to external data." The file does not contain queries so I click okay. I then get a message: "Unable to open or read this connection file." I have successfully opened this file in the past with Excel 2000. Has anyone encountered a similar error with Excel 2003? Could there be some special character in my file that is kicking out Microsoft's QCs?
