Get Message: Could not find the Extended Graphics State named GS1

I am trying to print to a pdf file from ESRI ArcMap and keep getting the error "Could not find the Extended Graphics State named GS1"

Things go really slow, then I get the opportunity to choose the file name, then even more slowly - then Acrobat opens and gives me this error.

Any ideas?
