My set-up is:

Primary-1: 20Gb - Windows ME
Primary-2: was empty, now 80Gb
Secondary-1: DVD/ROM drive
Secondary-2: 3Gb - Mandrake 8.2

using lilo to choose the OS to boot.

All was well until I installed the 80Gb drive and told the BIOS about it. Then I would get LI at boot time if I boot off the disk (/dev/hda); booting off the floppy was fine. I checked /etc/lilo.conf, all looked OK and I ran lilo without any nasty messages appearing but it made no difference. Telling the BIOS to ignore the new drive - no other changes - cured the problem and it booted successfully.

Where's the problem? Is it objecting to the new disk because it is there or because it's so big? Can lilo work with it, or would grub be required? Thanks.

Lilo works fine with an 80GB disk. What MIGHT be happening is that the order of the drives is changing from the BIOS perspective versus what LILO sees.

You may have told Lilo that Mandrake books from /dev/hdd
What may have happened is that the addition of the new drive demotes hdd to hde and the new drive is hdd, which of course doesn't have a bootable mandrake partition.

consider moving the mandrake drive to the pri-2 slot and the ne drive to sec-2...

my best guess.

Thanks, thedaver.

Yes, Mandrake boots off /dev/hdd and lilo.conf defines /dev/hda as its root.

I'm not sure about moving the disks round. Wouldn't that put the Mandrake disk on /dev/hdb amd mess up the boot? I take it that "ne" is "new", not "ME" (as in Windows ME). Still, I can try it.
