Get IP address based on socket descriptor

I am trying to find the IP address of the remote end of a open socket descriptor. Specifically, I am providing a service thru inetd and I need to know the IP address of the client. I think it may be a call to ioctl(), but there are so many options and no consice documentation that I've found.

Can anyone help?
