We just merged with a company that is running linux, I am not sure what version of linux, maybe someone could tell me how I could find this. My quetion is culd anyone tell me how to retrieve data from tape, I want to see what is being backed up.
Thanks,
RG

Hi,

You could try 'cat /etc/issue' although that may not work for all linux distributions; 'uname -a' will show the active kernel version and some other information, again depending on distribution.

For tape see the 'mt' and 'tar' command manual pages ... command 'man mt' etc.

Thanks ifincham, I am running Red Hat 7 (Guinness), now how do I find the tape device name. In UNIX I would use something like this to retreive data from a tape device;
ufsretore -ivf /dev/rmt/1, this /dev/rmt/xx, this is what I need, a device name, how or where could I find this?
Thanks,
RG

Hi,

Mostly probably /dev/st0 (if first scsi tape drive). Assuming tar was used you could list what was on a tape by :

tar tvf /dev/st0

Regards

I have tried using /dev/st0 and it returns no such device, so I tried using /dev/st0 through st9, but same results. I was able to get an idea of what was being backed up from the backup script, thanks Ken, but I would still like to retrieve this data if needed.
Thank you,
RG

I found it, it's /dev/ht, it was in the scripts.

Thank you for all your help,
RG
