Hi guys,

Has anyone set up a geoIP locator on their site ? Something that will automatically tell you where your guests are from, and that you could change page layout and language accordingly ?

I'd be interested to know if anyone is using it and whether they had to pay for it or did they set it up themselves. I don't mind getting my hands dirty if needs be, with php/c code or something like that.

I'd imagine it'd take a large database and then just an IP match. Either that or send the IP off to a third party site for verification. Any ideas here ? Did it take you long to set up ?

Hi

No idea what could geoIP do for you. But you could simply get an ip-to-country database, for example from here :

Then with a server side script just search for the visitor's IP.

Regarding the language, note that not all citizens of a country speek the same language. So better check the Accept-Language HTTP header sent by the browser. That one may have more language options enumerated, each with a priority qualifier.

Feherke.
