Genuine Autos Site Review

Nice, clean, and simple. I suggest you use hover effects on your menu so users can tell which link they're about to click on. Also, though maybe you're already planning to put this in, have some validation on your contact form. I clicked "send e-mail" without filling anything out and it said "thanks for contacting us" as though it were successful.

I just added a simple color rollover effect -- I didn't think underlines would look good with this design.

I'll add the js validation after lunch. I was going to leave it off because I figured if people don't want to enter an email they'll just put support@yahoo.com, bypassing the validation...but I guess for this type of form they're going to want to put their email, so that would just prevent unintended submissions.

Thanks.

Rick

I like the colors. However, when you click on the links the whole thing "jumps"a couple of px. Also, the curve of the menu is not smooth enough. These are small details though. Otherwise good job.

RISTMO, very nice. Verrrrrryyyy nice. Love the color schema, font style and whole site layout.

The only comment I have is on the 'Contact Us' page there is an asterick next to 'name' and 'email' which implies those fields are required, however when I clicked on the 'Submit' button, the form was submitted. Might want to get some form validation on that.

By the way, why do you have the 'contact us' info on pages with the cars info?? I clicked on the '2004 Chevrolet Cavalier Sedan 4D' for more info and there is the same contact us form at the bottom.

BTW, I must say usually PHP sites take very long time to load (and I have a cable modem), but you site was verry quick and fast. Nice work.

Jazz--"when you click on the links the whole thing 'jumps' a couple of px" -- you mean it shifts to the left slightly on certain pages? Isn't that just cause of the scrollbar which only appears on certain pages?

I'd been planning to leave the curve thing how it is, like it was supposed to be like that, but I'll try to smooth it out a bit -- something went wrong, and I lost my original psd file, so I've been kinda putting it off...the blue color's slightly off in that top left part, too -- something I wanted to see if anyone noticed besides me.

Gujumodel -- many, many thanks for the compliments :). About the contact us page, I'm working on the validation. The contact us form that's on the individual listings pages, however, was meant to be more of a "get more info about this vehicle" contact-type form, whereas the other is a general "email us about anything you want to". Any ideas on how to better convey that point?

It's great that the site loaded quickly -- I downgraded servers recently because I haven't had enough sites to justify the large one I had before. That this, with half the ram, on a 10 Mbit connection loads faster than most others on 100 Mbit connections, is awesome.

-------------

I'll try to make those changes first thing Monday morning when I get back to work.

*Many thanks to everyone who replied with advice/feedback!*

The overall look of the site is very slick, I like your use of colour and the way you've blended the photo of the sports car into the rest of the layout. I didn't notice the kink in the curve on the left before jazz88 pointed it out, but it would be worth sorting.

You've got the hover effect working on the menu, but I personally don't like to see white text "highligted" in grey - it means that the option you're currently most interested in becomes the least prominent. Try a different colour with equal intensity - a pale gold would be something to try. Alternatively make all the menu options a very pale grey and turn them pure white when hovered. I think you should have an explicit "Home" option in the menu too.

Another pet hate is Times New Roman. I just don't think it suits this site - I think a sans serif font would be a better choice for a hi-tech product area like cars.

Under the hood the markup's pretty lean, the layout's table-based but not excessively so. The only real flaw is that there's no DOCTYPE, meaning possible cross-browser problems as it gets rendered in quirks mode.

All in all very impressive - well done!

RISTMO, hey, you can add a link on the bottom of the individual pages and then direct the users to your 'Contact Us' page. And to categorize the contact form submission, add a drop that lets the user select why their contacting you. KInd of like 'I am interested in more infor', 'Report a problem', 'Would like to sign up for the newsletter'...know what I mean??

ChrisHunt -- Thanks for the menu advice, I'll try some different gold tones. I'll be sure to run it through a validator and get my doctype and stuff in there, too.

GUJUm0deL -- good idea, I'll run it by my manager. He wanted "a contact form on every listings page", but he might settle for this.

Thanks,
Rick
