GENTRAN NT 3.1.1 IDOC-X12 Mapping

Hello,
Need a few clarifications.
I need to map an IDOC document to X12 using GENTRAN NT 3.1.1. Do I need to map it as a flat file to X12 translation or Is there a neater/efficient way of acheiving this.
