I know IBM doesn't list Gentoo as a supported Linux for DB2, but does anyone know if it would work unofficially? And does DB2 have to be used on the NFS? I want use my laptop to learn the fundamentals of DB2.

AFAIK, you should be able to install DB2 on any flavour of linux. The most important thing is the kernel version and may be one or two others requisites which any flavour of Linux should be able to provide.

If you want to get support from IBM, then they will provide support only for the flavours validated by them. If you don't need the support, then it should not be a problem.

I've installed DB2 on arch linux (both 32 & 64 bit) and on debian. Neither official supported by IBM. I've encountered a few minor things ( during install. Nothing drastic and easy to be solved.
So, go ahead with Gentoo and keep us (me) informed please.

Another tip: when you install compiz as well (and why not?) include this
Code:
AWT_TOOLKIT=MToolkit
in your /etc/profile. This will maken db2cc "behave". (
