Hello all,

I work for a large organization (30,000+ employees) that has a variety of UNIX flavors (AIX, Solaris, SCO etc.) and I have been tasked with performing a company wide inventory of all UNIX servers globaly. The inventory should be as detailed as possible. I need to determine hardware, OS type, OS rev, patch level, application software, TCP/IP etc. Pretty much the whole ball of wax for each system.

My question is does anyone know of a query tool that can be used for these purpouses across a mixed environment? I am thinking that an SNMP Tool may be the best way to go. I do have the ability to spend a little money if it can be justified.

Thanks in advance.

Have a look at cfg2html - - it might be of interest to you.

Cfg2html is a UNIX shell script that collects UNIX host information, similar to Hewlett Packards check_config or get_config, except that it creates a HTML (and plain ASCII) system documentation for HP-UX 10.xx/11.xx, SunOS/Solaris, AIX, SCO Open Server, Linux (SUSE, Debian & Red Hat) and NT4.0/Win2000 (currently beta) systems.

There's been a thread on the mailing list this week on how to run cfg2html centrally, querying large numbers of clients & getting the information into one place. One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)

ajaycee,

Looks like an excellent comprehensive query tool. I assume this must be run as root on each system. Have you used this and know of any "got yas"?

I use it all the time - as root - with no problems. There's also a DOS version (runs on Win9X/NT) that only generates a text file.

We tie the output into our monitoring system (Big Brother - so that it's available when investigating problems :) One by one, the penguins steal my sanity. X-)
