Generate an invoice number?

I am still fairly new to COGNOS Report Studio and wonder if there is a way to generate an invoice number.

Cognos is no transactional application but it is used to READ data and report on it. So ,the answer will be no unless it is used to combine existing data and come up with a new code/number
