I've been telling my company for a while to get some sort of patch management system and they have stalled forever on it. Now, thanks to blaster and welchia, they are forging ahead and wanting patch management ASAP. I was curious on a whole what the likes and dislikes of SMS are and if there is a system out there better. I tried LANGuard Network Security scanner, but it did not seem dependable enough.

Microsoft SUS server utility, it pulls patches from the MS
updates server as soon as they're released.

It distributes the patches via SMS.

Yes, SUS w/SMS is great.

Short of that, you can still use SMS to push out Security updates with no problem. When you don't you SUS, you have to create the security packages yourself...but its not hard. Get WISE or use the SMS Installer to do it.

Stick with MS products if you can..the support can not be compared.

If you have a small business, SUS without SMS might be your best choice.
