System: Compaq Proliand 4500 with companion SCSI enclosure.
OS: Windows 2000 Advanced Server.

What might cause the SCSI drives in the companion array to be recognized by the controller on boot, but, once Advanced Server is up and running, the drives are gone?

Diagnostics indicate the controller is working correctly.

The 4.3 Gig SCSI drives originally installed in the companion array work fine. Its the upgrade drives (80 gig SCSI) that are having this problem.

Tjanks in advance.

Are you using real Compaq drives? as Compaq doesnt do a 80GB drive! (36GB, 72GB, 146GB but not an 80GB!)

And if they arent Compaq drives they wont have Compaq supported firmware on them and then its unlikely that they will work reliably with the Compaq controller!

Yes... the replacement drives are Seagate 72 Gig, 10K drives. They are recognized during POST and in the bios setup utility.

They are recognized as Seagate drives and not "Compaq" drives as the original ones are.

Hello,
Are the new disks in the same enclosure? If the disks are seen at post then they are hanging from a standard scsi controller (no raid/acu). Possible reasons why they are not seen in the operating system:
1. the drives maybe to new for the controller. 80 GB drives are typically 160mb/s (wide) while a controller of PL4500 vintage may not even be "wide" controller.
2. There is a physical problem with the cable or maybe termination. A device identified at POST can still have a severe communication problem. Check for event id 5's - scsi parity errors- in the event viewer system log. Reseat all connections, and you will need active termination.
