From reading through posts and FAQs on this forum and a few others, I'm trying to put together a "generic" CD to have when I work on someone's PC. Can any spyware removal apps be installed and run from the CD (Spybot, HJT, Adaware, etc) or do they all have to be installed on the computer I'm working on.

Do you guys install all this onto someone's machine, clean it up, and then remove all the apps you installed?

TIA,
Melissa

In general, you have to install the antiSpyware or antivirus and run it to clean the computer. However, there are now a number of online scanners that allow you to scan your computer without having to install anything, but this assumes you are connected to the internet.

I strongly advice Ewido sicurity suite.
From my experience, it did a much better job than both Norton anti virus and Microsoft AntiSpyware together.

It cleans everything, including viruses, worms, spyware, adware, etc.

You can download it and keep it in a CD and install it from a CD to anybody's pc, assuming of course a working CD drive is available.

Good luck.

Thanks eman.

I haven't had an instance (yet!) where a user had no CD drive, but them having no internet connection (or poor) isn't unusual.

I will look into Ewido again. I had used it for Trojan scanning, but didn't know it had more to offer.

I would suggest something in the order of BartsPE (with it you can make a Bootable CD version of XP)...

While using Bart PE you can integrate Adware scanners, AntiVirus scanners, etc. to do the job for you...

FPROT AntiVirus- can also be booted from CD and run in a DOS evironment, keeping the OS from interfering...

If it works don't fix it! If it doesn't use a sledgehammer...
