Hi

Just have a few things I wished to verify and get some idea about.

1. I read through some previous postings on compression in netbackup. the tape perform internal hardware compression. Would it be possible to gain more disk space using software compression? I am not concerned about network traffic, since the backups usually take 2-3 hrs to complete and are done when there is not a lot of network activity going on.

2. I am currently using a combination of LTO ultrium 1 & 2 tapes for keeping backups, Is that advisable? I am presuming that when the volumes are added, the robot(storEdge L8) is able to distinguish between the two in terms of their capacities. (Note: I am only using ultrium 1 (100Gb/200Gb) tapes to store backups whose retention period is 2 weeks, the total capacity for all these backups has never exceeded 50Gb) i presume I am safe, but I would just like to be sure.

3. I could not find the maximum mounts suggested for these tapes, could someone tell me how I can calculate them for my policies. Currently I have 5 daily backups for quite a few ultrium-2 tapes. I have not set any maximum mounts limit.

4. Currently, since I have no mechanism of verifying whether a tape has gone bad, I try to restore a testfile every month from each tape, what could be the possible indications apart from media freezes?

oskhan,
Have you figured out how much compression you are currently getting with hardware compression?
I currently use hardware compression and have yet to see any reason that I would greatly benefit from switching to software compression. Also keep in mind most backup software recommend you perform one or the other (Software or Hardware Compression). If you are running Veritas NB then you can look at your available media report and find the "full" volumes to see how much compression you are currently gaining from the hardware option.
