Hi. I have never used a mac before - but I have a general question. What are the settings that a typical mac user can set their screen resolution to? PC's have 1024x768, 1280x1024, etc... But what are the resolution options mac users have? And do these resolution options change amongst machines? For instance, if I have MacA which has a set of resolution settings & then I use a MacB(different kind of macintosh computer), will the resolution setting options be the same? THanks in advance

Jonathan

Resolutions are dependent on the monitor. iMacs, Powerbooks, and Apple flat panel displays are all wide aspect monitors so the resolutions are different than the standard 4 to 3 on a CRT and many flat panels (there are many wide angle displays for PCs to). Also remember that flat panel displays are built with a native resolution, unlike crts.

Resolution capaability in macs and PCs is dependent on the monitor and the display card in the machine. Most displays can handle up to a certain amount. The minimum vram in a mac is 32 (mini and ibook). Some cheap PCs have little or no dedicated vram.

I use a Powermac G4 with 64 megs of vram attached to a 21 inch Apple Studio Dispaly (crt). My min resolution is 640 X 480. Max is 1856 X1392. I have 10 others between those 2. I generally run at 1600 X 1200 although I also use 1280 X1024 a lot.

Using OSX 10.3.9 on a G4

I have several Macs in use, a mixture of 68030, PPC, and PowerMac G3s, with monitors ranging from 14" to 17", and with varying ammounts of VRAM. I simply use whatever resolution that is available that works for what I need to do.

This Mac is a G3 with a 17" monitor and I normally use it at 1024x768, 100Hz. There are 26 more choices available to me ranging from 640x480, 60Hz thru 1920x1080, 72Hz.

If I need to change the resolution, it only takes me 3 mouse clicks, and presto, done.

To find out what resolutions are available to you, go to 'Control Panels --> Monitors' where you will find a list of choices that you can experiment with. Just click on the size you want to test and your screen will temporarily be set to the new size. If you don't click the 'OK' in the confirmation box, your screen will revert to the original resolution in a few seconds.
