Hello :)

I use a smart card reader / writer with my Dig camera. I usually delete the pictures off the smart card with the reader writer. I thought that is what they were made for. but the tec guy at Fuji told me that i could damage the smart card if I used the smart card reader/writer to delete the pics. This dosent really make any sense to me sense they are made to read and write to these cards. If anyone could shed some light on this i would appreciate it :)

Thanks :)
Terry

If its not broken try to fix it anyway :)

Makes no sense to me either. I've been doing it for years without any problems.

I don't see any reason why using the reader to erase the card (or just parts of it) would be harmful to the card unless the manufacturer is aware of something in the engineering of that particular card that causes problems...otherwise, I would think it would be perfectly okay...I mean, that is one of the functions of the device, right?

Good luck,
Matthew

I use the move method when transfering my pics to my harddrive. This effectively deletes the files.
I have been doing it like this for years with the same camera, same card, and same reader.
I have had no problems whatsoever.

What this gentleman is telling you makes no sense to me either.

Good luck, and Happy Computing

I just thought of one thing he could have possibly meant. The damage wouldn't come from the act of reading/writing/deleting the files, but its possible to damage it during the handling. Slide it out of the camera, move it to the reader, slide it into the reader and then reverse to get it back into the camera. I don't know how how much abuse these can take (it probably varies by card type) and what sort of damage can cause problems - scratches-probably, smoke-probably not, etc.

If this possible 'handling damage' is what the Fuji guy was talking about, then the same could be tru for unsing your camera - the more you use it, the more like you are to drop it. That could damage your memory card too [thumbsup2].

Ah, but th real question is did you but a Fuji smart card reader or other accessory ;)

Thats probably the real reasoning. "Don't use other's because they could damage your product" might mean "I'd rather make you buy one of our products so we can make a little more money".

Do you know how hot your computer is running at home? I do

SMAH - Good point but probably very unlikely as the only contact or "mechanical" part involved is the leads (or pins) on the card that connect to the reader. From what I have seen, the reader end would most likely go bad first. Also, you have to insert the card in order to read the pictures anyway, so the card has already attained the "abuse" by being inserted into the reader... I think that the person you spoke with simply didn't know what they were talking about, or there is a specific issue with the model of reader you have that the individual you spoke with was aware of, but it is not generally true that the reader would "damage" the card...or else you would have a problem industry-wide with the smart cards and readers.

Just for the record, it wasn't me that spoke with this gentleman.

I agree. As for sliding the card in and out of the reader, I meant as compared to leaving it in the camera all the time and connecting the pc directly to the camera.

Hello :)

Thanks for all your help. I feel as though all electronic equipment that we use will at some time fail, even if it dosent have moving parts. Simply because it is exposed to heat and cool and different elements & old father time seems to take its tole on everything. This old computer i have I use it all the time, instead of the new one i just built, simply because i want to see how long it will last :)With all the junk i have jammed in it, I dont see how it runs at all, but its been running sense 1996 (LOL) It aint broke but i keep fixen it anyways :)

Just like to thank all of you for your help

Thanks,
Terry

If its not broke then Fix it anyway :)
