I have an NEC Laptop that "has" been working fine.. WIN2000Pro, 256 MB, 6 GB, PII 400 Mhz.

Updated WIN 2K from MS Friday night..
Ran Norton Speed disk over night.
Rebooted Sat AM and got a
TRAP 0000000D GENERAL PROTECTION FAULT & it hung there

no response to F5 or F8 on bootup..
the last time I remember GENERAL PROTECTION was WIN 3.1

tried to reload WIN 2K from CD and get disk errors..
hate to refrom from floppy anf loose all my programs (dat is all backed up)

Anyone suggest what this error means???

Could be corrupted data. Get to a recovery console and run chkdsk /r ________

I think you'll spend a lot of time trying to fix Windows 2000 and it's likely you'll not be successful. Even with a successful "emergency repair" you'll likely have to reload many programs. Might just as well save time and start over, by reformatting and re-loading Windows 2000. I don't know if this caused the problem and I really like Norton, but for defrag - Diskeeper 6 or 7 is best.
