General mysql 4.1 question

I am moonlighting on a project that uses mysql as the db and CR 7 as their reporting tool. Both do not support stored procedures. I cannot imagine programming life without SP, but I'm sure there is a way. How does mysql handle complex querying task, data manipulation, temp tables, etc (without sp) to then show results in CR 7? Recommended reading would be a +.
