I was just wondering when you install a linux app wheather it be a tar.gz or rpm where is the default install installed to ?? and can you make something be installed somewhere else ?? thanks

It's going to install wherever the author or packager decided it should install to.

Changing that generally wouldn't be wise unless you fully understand the code.

Is there some particular issue you are trying to resolve? Tony Lawrence

no just sometimes when I install something I dont know where it put itself ..

Oh, well that's easy- if it's a tar file, just use tar tvf to look at it. If cpio

cpio -itv < file

and for rpm

rpm -q -p file.rpm -l
