General Delivery Mailbox woes

Our knowledgeable sysadmin left suddenly leaving behind little documentation (other than user guides) about our phone system. The company who installed it is not returning our calls right now and no one can receive messages because the disk is full.

I *think* our general delivery mailbox is to blame. However, I cannot figure out how to log into it. I have reset the password, but we do not have a phone that is connected to that mailbox.

I tried calling from an outside line, but it says I am not allowed to access that mailbox from an outside line.

From inside lines, nothing I try allows me to log in to another mailbox other than the one the phone is attached to.

Any advice?

I don't seem to have an "other" button. Should that be an option on the display or one of the programmed buttons? I think I've tried pushing all of them.

When I do that, it asks me for a mailbox number. I put in 10 and it tells me the mailbox is full and goes back to asking me for another box number.

Do I need to somehow interrupt it to allow it to let me log in?

Sounds like you did F980 by mistake....that is to leave a message.
Make sure you are doing F981.

That proves your theory is correct.

Sorry but the only way is to delete messages one by one since you cannot delete a system mailbox.

Or have a tech in and reprogram it all via reinstall.

I don't mind deleting them one by one -- I probably should listen to them all anyway and find out what we've been missing. However, I still can't get in.

So here is what happens...

F981 -> goes to my voicemail
# -> Displays "Ext:" and gives a "DIR" option
10 -> Displays "Please Hold" for about 1 second and then "Mailbox Full", then back to "Ext:"

I have tried typing a star in all the places to try to get it to let me log in somewhere, but it never does. Usually pressing star makes the phone display "Exit" and then I have to start over. The one exception is if I press * after I press #. Then it switches to displaying "Mbox:" and "DIR". Typing in 10 at that point has the same result as above.

Do you think whoever programmed the system put in something different/weird? I am doing this from a T7316E phone if that makes any difference.

So just to see what the phone is trying to do when I type a number in "Ext:", I put a co-worker's extension there instead. It just calls that line (and strangely seems to never try to go to their voicemail -- at least not within about 15 rings).

So it isn't even trying to let me log in.

Is there some way I could temporarily tell my phone that I am extension 10 in order to try to get the voicemail? Or would that just create a bigger mess?

When you do Feature 981 the Display reads "Password"....also the right hand softkey will display "OTHER".

If you still cannot open another mailbox from your phone then it is defective or a glitch in your programming....I doubt each one.

I'm never asked for my own password -- I think it is set up to log in automatically from my phone?

I do F981 (or the programmed VMail key) and it displays my name and plays my voice recording. Then it displays "0 new 0 saved" and the 3 softkeys are PLAY, REC and ADMIN.

The only time I've had to use my vmail password is when checking my messages remotely.

SO NEW INFO! Apparently a while ago somehow one of our lines was hijacked and we got a bill for $1500. It must have been someone running a scam because I tried a few other phones in the office finally found one that is NOT automatically connected to a voicemail box and then was able to log into GENERAL_DELIVERY. It had a recording on it for some mortgage company no one has ever heard of and has about 1500 messages from angry people trying to get in touch with some broker.

Anyway, I still have no idea how to access that box from my own phone (not sure how phone line hijacking works and if it is possible they tried to cut off our access to the general delivery?), but I am going to sit here and delete those messages and hopefully that will solve that problem anyway.

Seems your mailbox has been programmed as Auto Login, meaning no password required.
Pathetic feature they added......my opinion, they stress passwords to be complicated yet offer it so anyone can login without a password.

Try from another phone, one whom has no mailbox or no auto login.
Or turn Auto login off for your mailbox under F983.

When I get everything deleted, does the disk free up immediately or does it need to somehow cycle to empty the trash?

I got down to about 200 messages and it still says it is full, but I really have no idea how many messages it *should* hold.

Hey all,

Thanks for all the help. I definitely got it solved and learned several things about our phone system. The tech who installed the system finally called me back, too, and he is coming by this week to do some maintenance and talk to us about possible changes/upgrades that he can do.

Listening to all the messages took quite a while, but there were actually a few important ones on there, so it was good that I did.

Thanks again!

Yeah well curly, guess I missed that one and I wouldn't be the first to miss something in a thread. That's very valiant of you and they say chivalry is dead. However I'm not questioning her actions as it seems as though you are mine. So yeah, move on bro.
