The boot process actually starts (at least through the bios check) then once it get to the point where the computer has to cycle through the boot devices it freezes. my motherboards is a MSI 845EMax2, P4 2.0, 512 DDR, what could be the problem? [soapbox]

You might try reducing the agp aperture setting to 32MB. I don't think it will work but that is the solution a local store "claims" worked on a very similar setup

Try disconnecting your hard drives and cdroms until you can get past that screen. Then start adding one on at a time to find out the problematic device.

Has this freezing just started to happen? When did it start and what changes have been made recently? If you can understand it, you probably don't.

i just got the new card. Everything works fine with my old geforce2 so its something to do with the card. Everything is A OK. Im replacing it but I appreciate the responces. [soapbox]

Flush the BIOS with the new card in the sytem. Thats right, FLUSH, not FLASH (yet). If you do not know how, consult the motherboard's manual. Usually its a matter of removing the battery and shorting out two pins for a few seconds.
If you can understand it, you probably don't.

what does flushing do? [soapbox]

A mate tried to borrow my spare card mx440 and it worked ok until he tried to play any games and it crashed, which after alot of head scratching it turns out that the motherboard and graphics card have technical issues and are incompatible. eg NV17? (think thats the number) graphics chipset is not compatible with all mobo's.

Looks like ur board may not be compatible, the only way i found out was on manufacturers website it listed compatible cards for the motherboard.

Hope this helps point/eliminate another possibility.

thanks ive already got an rma and i am shipping it back....ATI for me i guess [soapbox]

FYI, flushing will clear CMOS and any settings that may be conflicting with the new graphics card.
This is one of the first and easiest ways to troubleshoot a boot problem such as yours. If you can understand it, you probably don't.

then how does that effect all the other fucntions in my computer...ie the harddrives and cdrw and dvd and everything else plugged into the MB. [soapbox]

Because before your operating system loads, BIOS (basic input output system), will configure your devices such as the hard drives, CDROMS, video card, etc. If BIOS fails to detect such hardware, windows will not see it either.

Many times, little settings in BIOS will prevent a proper boot up and in order to save time and effort, flushing it to default values when adding a new piece of hardware is a wise decision. If you can understand it, you probably don't.

Ahh makes sense I guess ill give it a shot [soapbox]
