gcc in root path

installed samba for a test then uninstalled. I have tried to reinstall today and i cannot get ./configure to work (no gcc or cc in path) I have /usr/local/bin in path and a symb link from gcc to /usr/bin. Root cannot find gcc but normal account can find ./gcc. Has uninstall done this, it worked before. any ideas please? [nosmiley]
