Ever since I've installed Windows Vista Home Basic, the GB on my HD are gradually diminishing over time. I'll go away from the computer and come back about ten minutes later and it says I've lost 1 GB. I've been looking around the net for solutions , but yet to find any. The only thing I can do to neutralize this is turn off the computer or delete stuff to gain back GB's. If you need any info just ask and thanks in advance.

I've not used Vista yet (I'll wait for now), but can you run a disk clean up like XP? If so, this will at least tell you what capacity temp files and system restore files are taking up

Vista has two features that could affect this - first is System Restore (which you may be familiar with from XP) and the second is Volume Shadow Copy (MS may use a different term for it). Shadow copy makes backups of your documents periodically (Previous Versions).

The XP/2000 resource kit utility DIRUSE should work under vista (though I haven't tried it) - it will tell you what folders are using your disk space.

(DIRUSE must be run from a command prompt).

DIRUSE /* /, /M C:\

Ah, it turns out it was the System Restore making constant recovery points. It's now all fixed and better and I've regained my lost disk space. Thanks again.
