Routers and brouters are your example of a Gateway. Routers/Brouters just reroute information from one Network subnet to another. for example your network IP address is 192.168.0.1 and you start another network 1 mile awaybut you want the same IPscheme, then you would just set that network to 192.168.1.1 and use a router/brouter to pass information between the 2 subnets. Its like a ferry from an islan to the mainland. It takes the travlers from the Island (your branch network) to the mainland (your primary network).
TCP is just a transport protocol for the network (1/2 of TCP/IP).
UDP provides a connectionless, unreliable transport service. Connectionless means that a communication session between hosts is not established before exchanging data. UDP is often used for one-to-many communications that use broadcast or multicast IP datagrams.
SMTP and X.400 are email connection standards for connecting users to email.
OSPF is a routing protocol used in medium-sized and large-sized networks. This protocol is more complex than RIP, but allows better control and is more efficient in propagating routing information.
RIP is an industry standard distance vector routing protocol used in small to medium sized IP and IPX internetworks.
Hope this helps
