I am working towards a Network+ certification and there is one part of the course that bugs me a bit.

I can't quite define the difference between a Router and a gateway. The only difference appears to be that gateways exists on the boarders of a network.

Can anybody clarify?

Dazed and confused

Gateways typically connects two otherwise incompatible networks. For example, PC users on a local area network (LAN) may need a gateway to gain access to a mainframe computer since the mainframe does not speak the same language (protocols) as the PCs on the LAN. Thus, gateways on data networks often perform code and protocol conversion processes.

Routers are intelligent devices, blah, blah, blah...

You get the idea.
