Is this the proper forum to ask questions about a gateway unit?
I would like to know how well they work and how difficult they are to set up. and if there is any preferenses as to what make or model. I have 5 sites to link together

yes
when i have tried to inquier about it before it sounded like there were other makes or other systems that were available that might be prefrable. I always thought nortel equipment was bullet proof. I was also led to believe nortel voip gateway was discontinued or at least not promoted . I still know very little about voip, but i have a customer who has 4 remote sites. they are putting in a managed network and were asking about some ip trunking between all 5 locations. i have been installing norstar's since dr3's were the latest and greatest. I thought voip Gateway would be a lot cheaper than upgrading all 5 sites to BCM, just for a few trunks.

Your full-on correct. You need hardly any VoIP expertise to install a Gateway. As long as their Network/IT guy can get you IP info. It's programmed like a Loop Start line with Dest. Codes.
