I have an older gateway solo 3350 laptop. I can have either a 3 1/2 floppy or a CD-ROM connected but not at the same time. I'm trying to load Win 98 and am having problems. I can boot to the floppy (W98 boot disk)and get to a dos prompt, but I have to disconnect the floppy to connect the cd drive and when i try to run setup, I get a "seek" error and it won't read the cd. If I use a CD boot disk (W98) I can boot it up but when I select with cd support, it says "no drives found". I've been to bootdisk.com, I made a boot cd using nero and I can't get it to boot to a dos prompt where it will read the W98 cd. Any help is appreciated.

What I usually do is use an adapter to slave an older laptop's hard drive off of another computer, then format the laptop drive with fat32, then copy the win98 folder off the cdrom to the laptop drive. The adapters aren't expensive.

Please always take the time to backup any and all data before performing any actions suggested for ANY problem, regardless of how minor a change it might seem. Also test the backup to make sure it is intact.

You could use one of the burning programs that allow you to create a bootable CD and put your bootdisk on it. That would allow you to boot to the CD and allow you to install without a floppy. That way you have the bootdisk capabilities that the 98 CD doesn't.
There may be a BIOS setting to allow you to boot to the 98 CD as it has boot capability. It should format automatically if you have partitioned the drive.
Matt has the solution for those machines without the CD boot capabilities.
