Gartner Group, probably the largest computer industry research group, is advising companies to switch to a more secure web server, due to the recent rash of internet worms:

Let's get ready to sell some Unix ;-)

Not only Unix, but also IBM iSeries (AS400) and Linux. Mike Wills

No, you mean the IBM Z-series. "1,000 virtual Linuxes in a box, anyone?" ;-)

Yeah, all of the above. It seems that every month we get better and better reasons to leave Windows and go to Unix/Linux. It's really incredible when you think of the billions of dollars in unnecessary downtime and bandwidth saturation that has been caused by Microsoft's unwillingness to deal with certain issues. Yes, the virus creators are at fault, but let's face it: the target is as easy as hitting the side of a barn with a shotgun. It's like the rich man leaving his door open, and then complaining when he gets robbed.

The only problem is how to convince the pointy-haired bosses that they should stop forgiving Microsoft. It seems that a breakup in the romance between Microsoft and business is imminent, but corporations are like that "needy" girlfriend that will keep going back to Microsoft, excusing their behavior, after each fresh betrayal.

(Did I use enough analogies here...?)

Well, I think the most interesting thing about it is that it's Gartner Group saying it. There are companies out there who follow their pronouncements very closely. They're probably thinking: "This isn't one of those long-hair Linux people saying this, this is Gartner!"

Yeah, wasn't Gartner saying not so long ago "Unix will be dead in a year"? Apparently Unix is making a real comeback. Look at recent TV ads by IBM, HP, etc...

I just read that MS is pushing to get IIS 6 out the door by the first of the year in order to prevent companies defecting.

<RANT on>The problem is, as I see it, MS has always "pushed" to get their products out and that causes bugs. This is one reason why IIS has so many holes<RANT off> James P. Cottingham
