Garbled text in message received from another

I have a weird situation, I have been receiving email from a client who is responding to my email. His response comes through fine but my original message in the email reply is all garbled. Has anyone run into this situation?

Our Server Clients
SBS 2000 Lotus Notes
Outlook 2000

are you sending your email in unicode/html or a character set that gets "messed" up when he then sends to you in plain-text ?
