Hi there, When I create a pdf file from a Pagemaker document, one postscript font that I am using comes out with strange breaks in the text. Thus what should read: "this is a test file to see what happens to these fonts" comes out as "this is a test file to see wha t happens to these f onts". I am unsure whether these gaps are present in the postscript file as well, but obviously everything looks fine in the pagemaker document. Suitcase 10 does not indicate that there is any problems with the fonts, and to ensure that there were no conflicts I created a pdf file using only the problem fonts and the same thing happened.

Below I have outlined all the details that I think you will need to help resolve this problem. OS: Mac OS 9.1. Pagemaker Ver 7.0 (mac). Problem fonts: Ocean Sans MT Book (Postscript) and Ocean Sans MT BookItalic (Postscript). Font Manager: Extensis Suitcase 10. Fonts in System Folder: 9 fonts (the Mac OS required fonts). Postscript printer: Dont have a postscript printer so selected PSPrinter: Virtual Printer in the Chooser.

Creation of pdf file: Used the two-step process (to ps then to pdf): Thus the 'print' window in Pagemaker has the following: Printer = Virtual Printer, PPD = Acrobat Distiller (PPD). Under OPTIONS have selected the following: 'Download fonts (Postscript & Truetype)" "Write Postcript to File...." Have not selected "Use Symbol Font for Special Characters"

Software for Pdf creation from the Postsript file: Acrobat Distiller 5.0 (came with Pagemaker 7.0)

I have done some reasonably extensive searches thru various forums looking for similar topics to this, but have found nothing.

NOTE: I have since done a 'save for service provider' and found that there is also a truetype font in the pagemaker document as well (Times). It is chosen in the [no style] paragraph label in the Styles palette, but for the life of me I cant change it! I cannot delete that style and when I change the font for that style I cannot save over it - when I double-click on that style the dialog box that comes up has the name box blank and I cant seem to save it to the [no style] category. (Hope that make sense!)

Cheers, Shelley McMurtrie

Bear with me, as I am not completely familiar with Mac, being a PC person myself.. :p

The TT font style in the document that you cannot change, is that in new documents that you create also?

Have you tried uninstalling the fonts and reinstalling from the source disk or where ever you originally got them?

Another possibility is to install a printer driver for your printer.. do Macs use PPDs? This is where I become useless, knowing nothing about Macs other than they are different from PCs , but this kind of problem in a PC can be a video driver or printer driver related issue. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Hi,

it has probably something to do with the fonts. I had a similar problem with a font in a publication. Had to change the font and everything went fine.
I presume some older fonts or fonts from some foundries are not very good for pdf-creation.
truetype fonts are not so good for PDF so that is one thing.
On changing the no style. You open pagemaker and without opening a document you select a different font under your type menu. Now every time you start a new document the no style will be with this new font.
hope this helps

If the fonts were TT fonts, then the font is likely causing the problem, but she indicated they were Type 1, at least that is the impression I get from her original post. When I have had weird spacing problems before, it has been reflow due to driver problems... but I am not really strong in Mac and how they work as far as PPDs etc. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.

Viol8ion - thanks for your replys. I will try to answer your queries below:

YOUR QUESTION:
"The TT font style in the document that you cannot change, is that in new documents that you create also?"
MY ANSWER:
The TT font (Times) was the font in the [no styles] palette. However, I have manged to change this to a PS font by following the advise of Grillhouse. However, when I do a "save for service provider" the TT font (ie Times) is still coming up as one of the fonts used.

YOUR QUESTION:
Have you tried uninstalling the fonts and reinstalling from the source disk or where ever you originally got them?
MY ANSWER:
I have reinstalled the problem fonts but it hasn't made any difference.

YOUR QUESTION:
Another possibility is to install a printer driver for your printer.. do Macs use PPDs?
MY ANSWER:
Yes, Macs do use PPDs. At present I am using the Acrobat Distiller PPD that came with the software. However, I think that I will need to obtain a PPD from the printers and see if that solves the problem.

Grillhouse, thanks for your help.

I followed your advise re changing the font in the [no styles] pallette and it worked. However, when I do a "save for service provider" the TT font  (ie Times) is still coming up as a font that is in the pagemaker document. Frustrating!

Hi
if you don't wan't to use the TT Times version, go to your systemfolder and remove it from the fonts.
All fonts that are in the system folder show up in all programms you start. Sometimes they are needed for the program to work but often you can just remove them.

TT fonts are often a hassle, it is preferred to use a PS version of the font. So if you replace the TT version of times with a PS version, nothing changes.

hope this helps

Shells,

I agree with Grillhouse that it is preferable to use T1 fonts when possible. It is not that TT fonts are inferior, but there are amany font houses and individuals that create inferior TT fonts and they do wreak havoc on your system when you least expect it.

Here is a possible solution or work-around... create a new - clean document. Set up the styles as you want, then do a copy/paste one text block at a time from the old to the new.. then see how that prints.

Also, go to the website of the MFG of your printer and download the latest driver for your printer, install it and see how that works. When in doubt, deny all terms and defnitions.
