I have a nivida Geforce 4 440se 64 mb ddr. When launching games I get errors messages such as "unable to initialize Directx 8.0 - Device creation failed", "Cannot Create 3D Device" or "You must have a 3D card to play this game" I have the latest "detonator" drivers and Directx 8.1. Dxdiag reveals...Several files(mciqtz.drv, quartz.vxd)are beta version. My computer reconizes DX and video card. Possible solutions? Thanks!

Alternatively you could download DirectX 9 which is available on the site now ?

then do a search for DirectX and the top link should be for downloading ver9

I was told by Asylum tech support, that I do not want to install DX9 because I am running W98. Another item came up that maybe some one can answer. I ran a "open GL setup" program that came with a game. Which end result was something to do with my old card. which makes me think I haven't completly rid my computer of all things relating to my old card. What Is the proper to uninstall old card?

I would boot to safe mode and delete all "Display Adapters" and "Monitors" in device manager. Also, if you had onboard video before you upgraded to the GF4, then make sure it's turned off in the BIOS (there might not be a switch, but it should tell you 'disabled').

The next time you boot into Normal mode, reinstall your drivers and make sure you have DirectX 8.1a installed.
