Hello, i have greated a couple of new exchange users on AD but they havent as of yet (4 hours) appeared in the gal.

They can logon and use there email with no issues and people can sent to there SMTP but no matter what i cant get them to apprear in the gal. i have tried forcing a RUS update but nothing and no errors in the event logs

i can however using OWA find them when doing a find recipient.

any body have any ideas

DC and Exchange seperate server on same LAN

Think i fixed it.. well so to speak anyway

If you are running Outlook 2003, Check to see if you have your Outlook configured to use "Exchange Cached Mode"

Click Tools/Email Accounts, Click Next> then click the Change... button. Under the server name uncheck the box labeled "Use Cached Exchange Mode" Click Next> then Finish. Close and Restart Outlook.

Then check the GAL again.

this worked. tho it would be nice to know when outlook updates the cache?! as a manual download of the address list didnt work

In Outlook you can download the Address Book too, or even do a full Sync of the Server, that avoids the Cached mode.

BTW, for best client performance, cached mode is best turned OFF, let the Server do the hard work, not the client!

If 'something' 'somewhere' gives 'some' error, expect random guesses or no replies at all.

In cached mode, you use the offline address book, which only gets rebuilt once a day (at 5am by default, IIRC). In Outlook, click TOOLS>SEND/RECEIVE>DOWNLOAD ADDRESS BOOK to get the current version.

And - if you turn off cached mode (not recommended), you lose some junkmail filtering, rules processing, and some other features. You also increase bandwidth usage between the client and server. If the connection to the server is interrupted, users are dead in the water. Not the case in cached mode. It's much more efficient than non-cached mode.

When your users are configured to use Cached Mode what you think is the Global Address Book is really the Offline Address Book. You will need to rebuild the OAB.

Note that OAB updates do not show up right away. depending on the size of your org, the updates may take between 24-48 hours.

I hope you find this post helpful.

Mark
