gadations, half tones

Hi Im a screen printer - (t-shirts and stuff) I am wondering how to do gradations/ half tones, any how I'm hoping someone out there knows how to do them. I'm not even sure thats what there called.
I basically want to 'shade' with dots kind of like old comics, or pop art.
