I have a g430 gateway with a fan failure. Avaya is shipping me a replacement gateway. I started playing with a spare gateway we have sitting around as far as accessing the gateway and moving files around. Can I just backup my existing gateway and restore to my replacement? And firmware? I have to see what version firmware the replacement is coming with. The current one is running 36.9.0. I know it's no longer available for download. Can I run a higher version? Say maybe 36.16.0? And in changing out to the new gateway anything special in getting it talking to the existing system? Do I have to change the serial number anywhere or as long as it has the CM IP it will phone home? Any input is much appreciated!! And we're running 6.3

For your GW firmware it depends on the compatibility matrix for your version of CM software.

You definitely need to update the new serial number on your media-gateway CM config. cha media-gate x

I don't know the exact process to backup the running/startup config and dropping it on a new, but the MG config, even from scratch is pretty easy.

The fan's not considered a field replaceable part is it? I'm sure it probably is possible to do that. Plus I have 2 other sites with the same issue. I just as soon learn how to replace the gateways. That's what Avaya support wants done.

Thanks for the feedback so far.

Wpetilli so that makes sense changing the SN. That's what makes the connection to the gateway unique? Thanks for the info. I practiced on another gateway at my desk and figured out how to copy files to usb and do a backup. I guess I just need to verify firmware compatibility at this point.

Fans on G430s are not replaceable.
The serial number is the thing CM cares about to know 'which' gateway it is. Always do a 'show system' in the gateway to get it. Every once in a while a different mainboard gets shoved in a different gateway box with the wrong SN on the sticker.

Run 36.16 instead.

Depending how much config is on your gateway, you might want to backup like 'copy startup-config tftp ...". Otherwise, at a bare minimum, gateways need ip/mask/defgw + point to CM, but you can have a lot of config in there. Most gateways I've seen don't have much.

Backup and restore your announcements with ASA.

Well that went well. Was actually easier that I thought it would be. Once I removed the screws holding it in the rack the fans started to work. I have 3 other gateways with Fan errors. I think I will try some canned air on those just to see if that's all they need. I did go ahead and replaced this one. Did a backup to usb and a restore.

Thanks to everyone who chimed in on this thread.

Oh and it was funny I thought. I was trying to change the Hostname on the replacement. I couldn't get the ??? to go away! Duh. The ??? will show the gateway number once it connects to CM.
