G4 freezes on shut down

Recently upgraded from OS9.0 to OS9.1 (using a CD) so that I could upgrade some software (Photoshop 7 and AI10). The installation of both the OS and the upgraded software went well but now when I go to shut down, the G4 generally freezes. I then reboot and try shutting down again - it shuts down fine at that point.

I have had extension or preference issues in years past but it normally affected startup not shutdown ? Any thoughts.

I'd upgrade to 9.2.2. Also, rebuild your desktop. That fixed a similar problem for me once.

I have seen a similar problem on machines that are using Virex anti virus software.
More precisely scheduled actions within Virex, in this case and autoupdate on shutdown.

The problem was fixed by deleting the schedule and remaking it. From that point on the machines in question have been fine.
