I have a G3 on a TCP/IP network that has given me grief for over a month. It started out telling me I had buss errors. I replaced the drive scsi controller, video card, both hard drives, reinstalled everything numerous times, re-inialized both drives, removed all external devices, etc. I noticed when re-installing the OS (8.6) I found errors as well. I have not replaced the motherboard, ram (512 meg) or cpu. Now I get type 2 and type3 errors. I have alloted more memory to each program and opened them one at a time. I re-seated the cpu and the ram, but still no luck. Any ideas?
BTW, I do not have any ram disk and the virtual memory has been tried with it turned on and off and it seems to make no difference.

Thanks in advance for the help!

I would check the amount of fonts that you have running at any one time. If you can't fix it in 20 call someone who can.

I removed what Fonts I could. There is about 70 in the fonts folder. I only have the OS, NAV, MS Office, and Photoshop loaded. It still locks up or gives type 3 errors. Any more ideas?

Duplicate the fonts folder.

Then remove as many fonts as you can from the system folder until you are left with hopefully about 22. Restart and you should find the problems go away.

Don't put fonts into the system fonts folder as the OS opens every one at boot up which slows you down. Use ATM or similar.

System 8.6 has been fairly stable for me, and is on my 7200 at the moment. However, my G4 is at 9.1, and I understand that there are many bugs squashed in the version upgrade. I know I have fewer problems on the G4, so that may suggest upgrading to 9.1.

I also remember that there was a font-related fix somewhere back in 8.x (a font-fixer is available from apple.com -- check downloads). Apparently one of the system versions was corrupting certain fonts. You might check that out if you haven't explored that route. Its a free download.

Good luck -- these things are pesky and often not very obvious once you track them down. The price of a complex computer, I guess.
