I just got a iBook from a friend and it is password protected. This is a good friend and swears that it is not stolen but that he bought it from his uncle and now is selling it to me. Jis uncle varified the story but i am still a little sceptic. Anyways with my old iBook i just booted from the OS CD but this iBook won't boot from either 9 or X. i have managed to get it to boot twice (out out 200) tries from the 9 OS installer CD and when i try the X install CD it start to boot get to the screen with the smiling computer and then freezes after about 5 minutes. I dunno what to do. Can anyone help.

Have you got the right CD's for the IBook? When you boot the machine up hold down the option key, this will seach for any OS systems that are available to boot from. On either HDD or CD/DVD.

Have you tried booting with extensions turned off and delete the user prefs file? Or is the system running OS X on the HDD already?

If you can't fix it in 20 minutes call someone who can.

It sounds like the CD drive may be out of alignment. I don't think there's anything you can do except get it serviced by Apple.

Viper,

Ecaboodle's thinking of an OS9 fix, I think. You can't reset the admin password in OS X without the install CD.

Let's make sure we understand the problem:

1. You can boot off the HD, but you don't know the password for the admin account.

2. When you try to boot off an install CD, either OS 9 or OS X, the machine hangs.

Frankly, I still think you've either got a munged drive or as Ecaboodle says, you don't have the right disks. In particular, disks made for an older model iBook might not boot a newer model machine, because of differences in the video hardware and system firmware. This is why the newest machines can't boot OS 9 at all - OS 9 doesn't understand their ROMs.

I'm pretty sure your model iBook can boot into OS 9, however, my iBook 500 can.

Ok, which OS is on the HDD viper39? Does it tell you at the point of asking for a password?

If it is OS 9, then hold the shift key down and reboot the system. This will turn all extensions off. You should then be able to see the HDD on your desktop. Top right normally. Open it, locate the 'System folder/preferences folder' delete the user prefs file. Reboot.

If it is OSX then you might have to reinstall the OS onto the HDD. First I would make sure that the disks are correct for model of iBook. I have a G3 600 Mhz iBook which will install 10.1.1 (CD version 1.3). Should be written on the front of CD's.

I have a iBook myself and it's one of the models where you can boot from either OS, best way if you ask me.
