Problem: Kept getting error "too many fields defined" while trying to change data types in table design view.
Solution: compact & repair.
background:
I searched for "too many fields defined" and nothing pulled up.
While trying to change multiple "data type" in table design view, I kept getting "too many fields defined" error. Regardless of attempting to change one or many data types.
Access help only gave an indication that the number of fields exceeded 255 and that the user would have to remove some field and try again.
Knowing that the number of fields was below 255, I decided to compact and repair (even though I do this weekly,) Also, I just deleted all the records so that it was just the shell, but it corrected the problem. The table had 139 fields and 156,000 records. I was changing memo types into text types.
I was able to change data types without incident!
