I've been assisting people online for years, though only fairly recently on this site - one tool I've never seen mentioned here (or anywhere else) is:

It's freeware (unlike Everest), HIGHLY detailed (seems to have more details than any other program I've seen - including data like the manufacture date of RAM and monitors), doesn't do Benchmarking, but DOES interrogate the system identifying processes with open files (the openfiles command really only shows files open via the network, this does local too). Really, it seems like it's some combination of Everest and several SysInternals tools as well.

In any case, check it out - it's free. (I found it in the newest issue of Windows IT Pro, page 70 I believe)

I'm partial to Belarc Advisor, for Hardware and Software information. however the "open files" feature is interesting to sya the least. Thanks for the heads up.

Ignorance is not necessarily Bliss, case in point:
Unknown has caused an Unknown Error on Unknown and must be shutdown to prevent damage to Unknown.

You can get free personal use copies of the earlier Everest

Also Aida32 of which everest is a derivative?

SIW downloads:
Looks good!

Belarc Advisor
Lots of data but not as quick to deliver it
as Aida or Everest

Everest is simply a newer version of Aida32 - and Everest is no longer produced in a free/non-commercial version so it's rapidly outdating. That leaves BelArc, SiSoft Sandra, and this tool I just read about and posted, SIW.

(Just because Aida32 and Everest are getting outdated doesn't make them useless... but they will get less and less useful over time as the majority of machines get newer than these products last release dates.
