Functions in 7.0 -- do they exist at all? A way around it 1

We were on a tight deadline, the customer gave me MSSQL 2000 to develop on. Now they say they need all of the procedures / functions etc in MSSQL 7. It has been a while since I developed in 7.0 BUT I am not seeing the capability for creating functions.

Is that really true? MSSQL 7.0 did not support functions? I have update statements and filtering of data through functions, I cannot believe it will have to be rewritten to use procedures.

Please, any hints or advice, maybe a gun!

Sorry, SQL 7 does not include user defined functions. SQL 7 was the big change from SQL 6.5 where the page interleave was altered to allow quicker retrievals, the capability to detach and reattach databases, better replication model, and basically a complete rewrite from the ground up. Added features with SQL 2000 were the functions.

Since they gave you 2000 to work on, changing everything to 7.0 was not part of the original contract. This consitutes a change order. Make sure they pay you for the work as legally you gave them what they asked for. If they know they will have to pay extra (and personally I'd be pretty generous in my estimation of hours becasue you will have to completely retest everything to make sure no backward incompatibilites exist), then they may decide that getting SQL Server 2000 is better after all. There was a good article ('See You in Court')in this month's Software Development on these kind of issues and the causes of litigation between companies and outside vendors. Read the article; it may help you avoid similar problems in the future.
