Interesting article.

It still boils down to getting data from the point where created to the point where needed.

I remember my favorite program was Microsoft Works. It had a word processer, database, and spreadsheet program on something like 2-3 megabytes. The word processer, an embryonic MS Word, could be saved as an executable on a 1.4 MB floppy. Of course in those days, a 1.4 MB floppy was a big thing. :) It ran blazingly fast as well, even on my 8 Mhz box.

"Only this time, if we learn from the last installment of computing evolution, we'll be one step ahead of the game, taking these advancements seriously and planning how to grow with and manage these tools and their users back to the inevitable future. "
she sounds a bit too optimistic to me - "if we learn from the last installment ..." : we don't ! just look at what's going on !!

Exactly, what got lost in adding all the glitz to the desktop so users could do their own thing to get their daily jobs done those same users were creating islands of info. Now, everyone is re-learning how to pull it all together again to get the big picture or even just to enable the info to get from one end of the building to the other.

Kind of sad in a way how the wheel keeps getting re-invented. When I was in high school we were connected to a statewide mainframe. All we had were 110baud TTY's but I could do realtime chat and e-mail kids all around the state. Took over 20 years for that to get to the general public. At least each time it goes around it gets done a little better than the last time.

I haven't lost my mind - I know it's backed up on tape somewhere ....

i'm not even sure of that ! i'm sure that each time it gets bigger, maybe faster, harder to maintain, but i'm not sure it's "better" ... hey we now have to discuss about what "better" means i guess ;) ------

...and to defeat these islands of information the Corporate 100 deployed Enterprise Resource Systems such as SAP costing 10 of millions of dollars, hiring high paid consultants to implement these systems. On one SAP project I worked on much of the key functionality, like material control were not implemented correctly from the line workers point of view...guest what they went back to using to get product out the door.....Lotus 123 and Excell...on their local PC's. Talk about full circle :0 :0 :)

I submit that "better" means increasing value. Where value is equal to Quality, Service, Price.
