If I am do a full backup of C: and I later create new files under C:, will the next full backup store these files or does it only back up the files that were originally selected when creating the backup job? Essentially, can't I just run a full backup everynight and not mess with the incremental backups? Thank you so much

It may help us to answer your questions if you tell us what software you are/will be using for backup.

Generally speaking, a full backup backs up EVERYTHING, so new files should be included. Usually for full backups, drives are selected, not individual folders and/or files. If you are using explicit folder/file selections, then you may miss backing up something created after your made your selections.

A possible disadvantage to full backups is if you are overwriting backups every night, you'll have no recourse to recover a deleted file if it existed only in an earlier (now overwritten) backup.

let me try this.

as i understand it, one does incremental backups daily. these take into account changes to files that were made since the previous backup. if a new folder (B) was created within another (A), and A is backed up in its entirety, then B would be included; conversely if only some folders in A are included, the B must be added to the list the first time, but will be automatically included in subsequent backups.

these incremental backups are kept separately for a defined period of time (one week, two weeks...) before they are overwritten. if two weeks is used, day 1 would be overwritten by day 15 (if two calendar weeks) or day 11 (if two business weeks), day 2 overwrites days 16/12, etc.

one does a complete backup weekly, twice weekly... as needed and these are also kept separate. suppose the backup ocurrs weekly and rotated 4 weekly. week 5 would overwrite week 1...

if this is unclear, please add comments to help.

there is no hard and fast rule about this. ask other sys admins you know for their practices.
