This is the strangest thing I've ever seen - well, recently anyway.

I have an FTP Task that downloads five files from a remote location. Four of the files have a TXT extension, the fifth has a CSV extension. The four TXT files download without a problem. The final CSV file seems to download okay, but on completion it disappears. The task says it completes successfully. I'm not doing anything else with the files after download. When I use FTP.EXE to check things, the CSV downloads fine and stays right where I put it.

Has anyone had this happen? What is the problem?

bizarre, that is weird!! when you run the dts task, view the folder you are ftping to. Does it appear then disappear, or does it never appear in the first place?

What version and SP are you running?

I'm running SQL 2000 SP2.

The appears in the destination folder and the size increments while the FTP is taking place. On FTP completion the file disappears.

There is a ghost in the machine.

does sound like a ghost!!

I read a kb article which had s similar sounding problem to yours where it would ftp most of a file and then if you got any kind of network problem the file would disappear(cos it didnt all get downloaded), and then it reported a successful completion, though this problem was fixed in SP1.

I'll have a hunt and try to recreate the error. In the meantime as a work around, if it causing you a major problem you can run your ftp.exe script as an execute process task if that seems to be working ok.

When the size increments, does it get all the way up the full file size, or disappear before that. If you are able to test, if you replace the .csv file with a 5th .txt file of the same size does it do the same thing?

No network problems. It does download completely. I've been doing a little testing and hears what I found:

I eliminated the first four files and tried only the one CSV: it downloaded then disappeared. I tried only two files at a time: the second file downloaded then disappeared. Hmm, I'm on the something. I tried four files: the first three are okay then the fourth file downloads then disappears.

So its always the last file, huh? Nope. Just for kicks I tried scheduling the DTS package so it would run on the server instead of my local machine. ALL FILES DOWNLOADED JUST FINE! What's up with that?!?!? Talk about chasing my tail.

It seems I just encountered an undocumented "feature" that nearly caused me to aneurysm. Jeez. Thanks for the assistance, Matt.

Hi Angel -

Did you ever resolve this issue. I am having the same problem when downloading to my server. The file completely downloads, sits for a while and then it's gone.

Any help you can provide would be great!

Thanks.

I should have posted my solution. Sorry about that.

I downloaded and installed the latest MDAC and it started working fine. MDAC shouldn't affect FTP. <shrug> Good luck.

There was a bug in the ftp task which would cause it to delete the last file downloaded.
Don't know which version you have but make sure you have the latest service pack (on the client).

Cursors are useful if you don't know sql.
DTS can be used in a similar way.
