I need to create an unix account for ftp purposes, but I have to avoid the shell for this user. The only way that I know to avoid access to the shell is through the changing of .profile. Is there another way to do it ?

Remark: I don't want to use anonymous FTP.

Thanks a lot,
Augusto

Augusto,

Changing .profile isn't so *very* bad, and it's easy to put back if it causes you troubles. Why are you reluctant to go that way?

Hi,
The best way to do that is, You give some invalid shell in the /etc/passwd file for that particular user.
The entry for that user in /etc/passwd looks like

username:passwd:uid:gid:comments:/home_dir:/usr/invalidshell

Here I have given the shell as /usr/invalidshell which will be never present in the /usr directory.

Hope this helps..

Suresh.

Hi guys,
