I am having some trouble with a new box on a separate network. It is ftp running on solaris 8. From within the subnet it works fine. Outside of the network(beyond the router) everything works but the ls command. I can get and put files at will, but the list just won't come up. It hangs shortly after telling me command successful. From within the subnet it is fine as I said...so my intuition tells me to check the router. FTP is allowed through(obviously since I can connect, login, and move files)...Is there anything I am missing here. I have had it running successfully in the past on this very same hardware....Any ideas?

Sounds like a very odd issue.
Can you or someone else ftp the opposite direction

I have had many people do so, it is the same everywhere, even with netscape ftp in to the system.

you can not get data connection (PORT command) throuh your router as it usually comes from ftp server to free port on client or in passive transfer mode - from ftp client to port 20 or any other port on server machine (you cannot transfer files too)
