I have some web pages with links to PDF files. The pdf's our currently on an ftp server and i'm finding that some people our unable to access the pdf's. It's weird, i've tested on about 30 PC system configurations and still haven't figured out why it works on some and not on others.

My question is simple. If i switch all the pdf files to an http server, will it work for everone?

Here's a sample page:

If they can see the web page, then yes, moving them to your web server will most likely solve the problem.

Your pdf's worked fine for me. Did all the machines you tested on have Adobe Reader installed? What error were you getting with the machines that failed to get the pdf's?

Most systems had Adobe Reader installed. For the ones without the Adobe Reader a requester comes up asking if you want to save the file (Most people don't have a CAD program plug-in for the DWG files, they also get a requester asking if you want to save the file.)

For those PDF's that don't work I don't get any error message - it just sits forever with nothing happening transfering.

Of the 30 PC systems i tested on, 11 failed. I can't find what's differant in those 11 systems that none of the working systems have.

That is strange. The only thing I can think of is that those machines have IE with the security level set to high. I just tried getting one of your pdf's with IE on high security and it didn't work. If you don't know how to change it, go to the Tools menu, and choose Internet Options. On the security tab, choose the appropriate zone, Internet or Local intranet, depending on whether your web server is local to the machines or not. Then set the security level.

Is your FTP runing in passive mode? If that is the case, only browser with "Use passive FTP" enabled will be able to connect to your ftp server and retrieve files.

Thnks byam

That answers it. Problem is a can't go around and change that setting on every visitors computer. So i'm stuck with having to change my ftp server to an http server.
