FTP uploaded back end is read only to front end ?

[tt]Hello:
I have uploaded a file from my office using FTP Dummy!, and when I try to open the file with the front end, it will not allow me to make any changes in the back end. However, if I open the back end I can change data in the tables. How can it be read only to the front end but allow data to be updated in the raw backend?
Appreciate your help with this.
