I'm running a pretty much out of the box configuration of MS proxy server, which works fine for http, but I can't use FTP from any machines on my network.

I get a 'socket error: no DNS entry' message when I try to connect to a website. I assume the request doesn't get past my proxy server.

It's not the end of the world, as I can just go to the server and connect from there, but I'd rather do it from my own desk. Any ideas?

I believe MSIE uses other ports when trying to handle a ftp:// url. Try using a dedicated FTP client like ws-ftp or cuteftp.

Unfortunatley I'm already doing that. I've tried ws-ftp and a couple of others, but to no avail.

I was just assuming that as http connection is very straightforward, another protocol should be too.

Oh well, better get the books out.

Thanks for the idea anyway!

on the MSPROXY server change the default port from 21 to something else. Like 22. then on the Client machine under IE change the port for FTP to then new port.

Sometime on the proxy server other services maybe using that port and if so this will fix it.

Also, if you have not already done so, make sure you currently have your ftp port setting set to 21. You will have to use the advance settings in the proxy setup to change this.
