I hv setup 2 FTP servers, as follows:

1. FTP server 1
Dell PowerEdge 2950
Windows XP
Filezilla server
FTP throughput: < 1 kbps

2. FTP server 2
Dell PowerEdge 2950
Redhat Linux
vsftp
FTP throughput: > 8 Mbps

Both are sitting on the same subnet on the same switch. Theoretically, I shld get similar FTP results for both FTP servers, right? However, what I get is very different, pls see above the FTP throughput results (1 kbps vs. 8 Mbps).

Dear experts, why do you think is the huge difference in throughput? Is there anything I should look into so that both will give good throughput (>8Mbps) regardless of OS?

Thanks a lot.

If they are on the same subnet, what is likely happening is that the router is taking preference to the second server over the first. You should use different subnets with different ports.

How do I check if the router is taking preference to the second server over the first server?

Currently, both are sitting on the same subnet, connected to different ports on the same switch. Why is it that I hv to use different subnets for the two servers?

Thank you.

Run your speed tests from a client on the same subnet as the servers. If you still see the difference, it's got nothing to do with the router.

Burt, why would a router do this? Everybody has multiple servers on the same subnet. Or is this some weird FTP-only thing?

If he was ftp'ng to more than one ftp server, both on 21, I would think it may prefer one over the other...maybe not...

Burt

I was not doing the ftp to both servers at the same time. I was doing the ftp to one ftp server, stop that, and then ftp to another ftp server. The results is always the same, i.e. ftp to FTP server 1 gives low throughput, whereas ftp to FTP server 2 gives good throughput.

Any idea? Thanks...

A silly question but do you have the Windows Firewall off? Or at least allow ports 20 and 21 to allow incoming and outgoing comms?

SimonD.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Yes, I hv the Windows firewall off already.
However, how do I ensure that ports 20 and 21 are allowed incoming and outgoing comms?

Initially, both the FTP servers give similar throughput (>8Mbps). One fine day, the Windows FTP server just snapped and started to give out very low throughput even though nothing was changed. Wonder what's wrong...

Thanks.

I agree with lawnboy.
Run those tests on the same subnet as the servers.
This will tell you if it is a server or network problem.

Are you sure you didn't click the button that said "Surprise Me"?

Sorry, couldn't help myself.
